Who Are We

Founded in 1998, Apne Aap Women’s Collective is an anti-trafficking organization that serves the women and children of Kamathipura, the red light area of Mumbai that is also the largest and oldest red light area in Asia. Our organisation operates three programs: Umeed for women in brothel-based prostitution (ages 18+), Udaan for daughters of Umeed members and other girls living in the red light area (ages 6-18), and Umang for toddlers of Umeed members and other children living in the red light area (ages 2-5).Through these programs, we provide our members with the tools and resources to make choices for a better quality of life. In particular, AAWC seeks to prevent the intergenerational cycle of prostitution for Udaan and Umang members. Since 1998, we have served more than 1,500 women, 650 girls and 400 toddlers. Our alumni have entered respected professions like accounting, beauty, business process outsourcing, dance, hospitality management, luxury cuisine, medical compounding, nursing, photography, retail, teaching, and social work.
